Extra Activities
MUSIC
Pupils from first to sixth class all begin by learning traditional tunes on tin-whistle. They may then go on to take up the fiddle, accordian, flute bodhrán or drums.
Our school band takes part each year in local St.Patrick's Day Parades. They also perform in our school concerts and also take part in many liturgical services in our parish church, eg. Advent, Christmas, First Communion, Confirmation and our beginning and end of year school masses.
DRAMA
Every class from junior infants to sixth class take part in drama class throughout the year. Great emphasis is placed on promoting self-esteem, social skills, and responsibility amongst the pupils. Our Christmas concerts over the past number of years have been a great success as have our end of year concerts. Each year we have plays from each class grouping and we all enjoy dressing up and performing for our parents and families.
SPORT
The children in third fourth, fifth and sixth class regularly represent the school in Mini-Sevens and Cumann na mBunscoil competitions. Here the emphasis is mainly on enjoyment and participation. We have both a girls team and a boys team. Mr. Bracken trains the two teams.
At Scoil Íosa we realise how important exercise is for every child. We are lucky that we have a general purpose room in the school that allows us to do P.E. even if it is raining. We also have a large playground and lots of green areas outside the school, where children can play soccer, gaelic, hurling or basketball.
ART & CRAFTS
All of our teachers implement the new visual arts programme within our school. All of the children really enjoy this time. Our pupils have also made pots using modelling clay and regularly paint lovely scenes based on themes for use in our school or in our local church for Christmas, Easter, First Communion, Confirmation, Lent etc..
