Sixth Green Flag

Flag raising

GREEN SCHOOL PROJECT 2014 - 2015

This year we are working towards our sixth Green Flag. This flag is for schools that have been in the in the Green Schools Programme for a long number of years. The theme is Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste.
In our school litter pickers check the school playground every day after break and dispose of any litter. We had a Spring Clean earlier on in the year. We recycle paper, card and milk cartons. We compost fruit and pencil sharpenings and other materials. We re-use paper and card when possible. We encourage people not to litter.
For global citizenship, 5th and 6th class pupils did projects on Pakistan, Poland and Canada, which are countries of origon of some children in our school. The pupils then presented their projects to the other classes so we all learned new facts about these countries.
We also raised €250 from our Halloween raffle to buy dinners for children in poorer countries through the Children helping Children charity

Scoil Íosa was delighted to be awarded our Sixth Green Flag in May and Fr. Michael Quinn raised the flag at a cermony on 12th June. On the day the children all participated in songs dances and drama related to the themes of 'Litter and Waste' and 'Global Citizenship'. Following the ceremony refreshments were provided by the Parents Association. A great day was enjoyed by all.

In October we had a visit from Martina Butler, from the Heritage in Schools Scheme. We all learned alot of interesting fact about Our Woodlands, for example, the different layers, The Canopy Layer, The Herb Layer, and The Leaf Litter Layer. We saw lots of different trees and their leaves and then we had to act as nature detectives in the school grounds finding some of these trees and their seeds. We also had a minibeast hunt in the school grounds. It was very enjoyable. All classes took part on the day.
